Banquet Awards and Captain/Selectors Elections

West Potomac celebrated Rugby Holiday (a.k.a. Awards Banquet) on Saturday, February 25 at the Capital City Brewery in downtown Washington, DC.

Award WinnersThe event was well attended with a great mix of Old Boys, team regulars, and new faces as well as some lovely ladies decked out to the nines. There was also an appearance by a very libertine Natty Boh..what are you gonna do, it’s a party.

And — speaking of parties — they don’t just happen by themselves. This year’s shindig was organized and executed by Alix Preston and it was a great one. Biggie ups for Alix and everyone who helped out with organization and donations for the silent auction (I am looking in your direction Pabst Brewing Co).

Amidst the open bar and steak gorging, the folks in attendance found time to vote on this year’s award recipients and the medals went to:

  • Rookie of the Year — Brent Kershaw
FUN FACT: We are pretty sure his shenanigans as RedMan in FHV had as much to do with this as anything that happened on the field
  • Back of the Year — Mark Tucher
FUN FACT: Never before has a team ever benefitted so handsomely from the controversial “Let’s Move the Dude Who Doesn’t Kick Very Well to Fullback” strategy
  • Forward of the Year — Jason Hewgley
FUN FACT: Jason thought wing was too boring so we moved him to hooker AND expected that he would find time to finish at least one suduko puzzle per half
  • “Captain Crunch” and MVP — Mike Fletcher
FUN FACT: Mike is a serious guy — and the hardest hitter on the team — so we are not going to joke around
  • Team Service Award — Dave Gedeon
FUN FACT: We came close to taking a steak knife and making Mike’s the “Captain CrunchED” award for Bible. LAD was not amused, so Paul improvised…

We also awarded the Coach’s Cup trophy and this year it went to Jason Hewgley. Jason not only had success on the field, transitioning from a rookie wing to one of the most pivotal and demanding positions on the field as hooker. He also servered as the team’s Social Chair, planned a banquet and negotiated a new bar contract, and still had enough left in him to stand for the most unforgiving and thankless officer position in 2012: Match Secretary.

Earlier in the day at practice, we elected the Captain and Selectors for the Spring 2012:

  • Captain: Josh Ronaldo
  • Forwards Selector: “Pirate” Pete Judge
  • Backs Selector: Mike Fletcher

Congrats to all of the guys who were awarded for their play and service in 2011 and hats off to the guys who are stepping up this year. We are in sure hands and now it’s our job to make the officers, captain, and selectors all look like geniuses by making sure all fo their decisions turn out well!

West Potomac Rugby with Ryan Bravo Hopkins and Tracy Denholm.

West Potomac Rugby played an excellent game against the Baltimore Chesapeake RFC this past Saturday, losing 22-19. Slippery conditions led to a lot of dropped passes, but the West Pot pack played their best game of the year - dominating the scrum all afternoon, including a penalty try earned after driving the scrum into the tryzone from the 5m line.

This week, West Pot's Man of the Match jacket was earned by lock Tracy Denholm, and West Pot Player of the week went to flank Ryan Hopkins. Well earned, gents!

This weekend West Potomac RFC travels on an international goodwill mission, exporting much-needed bravado and freedom to our neighbors to the north, as the club takes part in the Monty Head Tournament of Champions in Toronto, Canada.
