Rugby is a pretty easy sport to play.  Generally, all you need to step out onto the pitch and have a good time is a willingness to learn the ropes, the intestinal fortitude to take a couple of bumps and bruises, and the good sense (or lack thereof, depending…) to keep showing back up.

That said, there are a couple of things you can add to your inventory (your ‘kit’ bag) that can help to elevate your game to the next level.

First off, get yourself a ‘gum shield’, AKA a Mouth Guard.  Concussions are no fun, and West Pot would really like to keep your pearly whites in their existing format and arrangement.  While you’re at it, get a few.  They tend to fly out at the most inopportune moments, so it’s a good idea to have back-up.

Next, a good pair of Rugby Shorts are essential.  They’re not like regular shorts; they’re made of a coarser, stiffer material than gym shorts that allows for some of the more advanced rugby maneuvers (line-outs, scrums, etc.).  Also, they’re reinforced in all the important areas to withstand the pulling and tugging you’ll experience during the course of the game.

Then, a good pair of cleats, or ‘boots’, can really make a difference.  There are a number of different types of spikes on the market.  Depending on your position, you might want a pair with High-Ankle Support.  However, there’s lots of different types.

Lastly, we have a whole line of West Potomac apparel available for purchase on our online store. The store opens briefly in Spring and Fall every year.
